My marketing blitz for “Global Agritech 101” is finally getting over tonight (Phew!!) as we get ready to kickstart the third cohort of Global Agritech 101 tomorrow.
If the mood of the recently concluded World Agritech Event in SF is any indicator, the focus is currently on, as Shane Thomas put it neatly in his newsletter, Survival. How did we end up here? Is it because of the tendency of the agriculture sector to operate much like the airline industry, capturing only a fraction of the value it creates?
“The airlines certainly create value in that the public is much better off because they exist. And they employ tons of people. But the airlines themselves have never really made any money. Certainly some are better than others. But probably none can be considered a truly great company.” - Peter Thiel’s Lectures.
Replace “airlines” with “agriculture” and reread the quote above. Why is agriculture globally consolidating like the airline industry with just four or five major players?
In the Evolution Module of the course, we address this by looking back at the three pivotal shifts - 1957 (when HBR profs coined ‘agribusiness’), 1980 (GPS in ag), 2024 (Agritech becomes Climate Tech) -in agritech evolution and delve into the climatic patterns that affect the evolution of agritech, viz.
Vertical strategy models giving way to Horizontal strategy models (and vice-versa)
Bull-whip effect in agri-input and agri-output supply chain (more pronounced in smallholding contexts)
Consolidation giving way to deconsolidation (and vice-versa)
Centralized supply chains giving way to decentralized supply webs (and vice-versa)
Economies of Scale giving way to Economies of Scope (and vice-versa)
We also delve microscopically into the evolution of agricultural technology starting from 1980s until 2023
32 hours left for the course and we will be closing the registrations by EOD.
Dates: 20th April (Evolution Module) - 27th April (Value Chain Module) - 4th May (Tech of Agritech Module)
Time: 8 PM to 10 PM IST
Reviews are here. Tickets are available on Stripe here for those outside India and Razorpay here for those inside India for registration.
P.S. Global Agritech 101 being a cohort course, you get to become a lifetime member in a cohort of several founders and agritech professionals who have signed up for the course along with you. The value lies more in the community and interactions rather than the 6-hour content, if you ask me.:)
P.P.S. Thank you for lavishing your attention on Agribusiness Matters. It means the world to me:)
