0/ Desperation

When the driver's hands picked up the bottle of "Charged" at 7 AM, I was dismayed. Manoeuvring through the chaotic roads of Mumbai, his hands picked up the bottle and had his fill while he set out to drive me to my concert venue—a four-hour drive from Mumbai.

"Why are you having this drink in the morning of all time? Are you aware of what gives this red colour?" I asked him with genuine concern.

He brushed aside my concern with an uncomfortable look. He became apologetic and shared how he had to drive down the previous night until 2 AM and this "charged" was needed to keep him going.

This phenomenon is everywhere. I've met construction workers who work two shifts in a day, thanks to Gutka (chewing tobacco). Farm workers have their share of addiction to keep up with the grunt work and more importantly, tolerate them. This is perhaps the most ignored element in our discourse around healthy eating.

Unhealthy eating habits are a product of a lifestyle that is more often lived out of desperation to make a living. If we don't give better livelihoods to our rural brethren, we are going to pay the price with a massive health crisis across rural India.

Last week, I spoke on a panel discussion on enabling Sustainable Agriculture through Agritech IoT devices.

While talking about the evolution of their business models in the pre-harvest supply chain (1.3 Mn hectares added every year under micro-irrigation in India), I made this model on the fly. I feel it accurately maps this ecosystem's three-stage evolution of business models.
